Warning signs that your toddler has a speech delay

Do you have a little one at home and you suspect that he has less words than his older sister did at his age?  Or maybe your toddler is in daycare and you’ve noticed that the other kids seem to have a few more words than her?  Are you thinking that there may be a problem?
You’re not alone.  I for one was in that position when our daughter was a toddler.  We noticed she wasn’t saying much to her peers at daycare, and that got us a little worried.
Thankfully, there are guidelines we can use to help us.  These toddler developmental milestones include several statements that describe the abilities and behaviors of an average toddler at different age milestones.  With respect to speech an communication, here are a few statements for younger children.
At 12 months old, your toddler should have 0-2 words and should try to string sounds together like “ma-ma” or da-da”
At 18 months old, your toddler should have 10-15 words and will try to imitate words.
And at 2 years old, your toddler should be saying 50 words and asking two word questions like “where’s daddy”

When running through this, it’s important to note that:
- a “word” doesn’t mean a perfectly pronounced word, but it could be a similar sound that they use consistently for something (like “wah wah” for water).  This is especially true for younger toddlers
- not all toddlers will hit the milestones perfectly.  It’s if they are slightly off on a few.  However, it could be more of an issue if they are off on many of them or very far off on a few
